Pioneering the Galaxy: Boldly Going Where No Strain Has Gone Before.

Is that really Blue Dream you are smoking? What is Blue Dream really? How much does the name actually matter?

We recently found out that a strain we are cultivating is actually of a different lineage than we thought. The grower who gave us that particular cut either believed it was what he told us, or told us what he wanted us to believe. It seems this happens far more often than one might think. How could we know what strain it really was? Thanks to Phylos Bioscience and their groundbreaking genetic testing technology, growers and consumers alike have a new world of information at their fingertips.

Cultivators have long been collecting, trading, cloning, and breeding a huge catalogue of cultivars (a strain produced by selective breeding), without reliable science to verify lineage, strain, or otherwise determine the accuracy of the strains. The only way to be sure of accurate genetics is by trusting the word of reputable seed companies and breeders. Until now, we have relied on oral histories and physical characteristics to determine genealogies, which has resulted in wildly inaccurate strain claims, often unintentionally. Growers simply use the name they were given or, in some cases, make up their own name. But how do growers know what cultivars they are REALLY producing? And how do consumers know if they are buying what they intended to buy?

The revolutionary work of Phylos and their Genetic Galaxy allows growers to determine the accuracy of strain data and see its genetic relationship to other strains. With the newly released Clone Groups, we can see the genetic source of any strain, regardless of its name. For example, over 30% of the strains submitted as Blue Dream in the galaxy are outside of that clone group, telling us that they are NOT Blue Dream at all! Conversely, over 50% of the strains that ARE in the Blue Dream clone group were submitted with another name.

We are no strangers to the benefits of the Phylos Galaxy. With our recently released CBD strain, Corazon, we originally believed this strain to be a cross of ACDC and Charlotte’s Web. It turns out that Corazon is actually a solid cut of ACDC. Corazon, however, displays unique characteristics including an incredibly pungent aroma, delicious flavor, extremely high CBD potency, and beautiful bud structure. It doesn’t look like any high CBD strains we’ve seen before, including ACDC we’ve grown in the past. Corazon deserves differentiation. This is because of ACDC’s epigenetic response to the growing conditions and environment at Yerba Buena.

As Phylos points out, epigenetics occurs when new genetic characteristics hidden within DNA begin expressing themselves, usually as a result of exposure to a new environment or other external factor. This is evolution in action. Cultivation practices play a huge part in the way a strain expresses its characteristics and mutations, and will determine its structure, terpene profile expression, and their effect.

Corazon has transformed dramatically from our original cuts of ACDC, showing incredible phenotype evolution, ultimately creating this cultivar. It produces consistent results and has developed its own variation and distinction. We are so glad to finally have a clear genetic story to accompany this incredible strain.
